Tour of Leopardi's House | Languaging Diversity 2016 at UniMC

Tour of Leopardi’s house (in Recanati)

Tour of Leopardi’s house and private library followed by… a wine-tasting/aperitivo experience in the old cellars of the palace!

Giacomo Leopardi, one of the most acclaimed and renowned Italian writers and philosophers of the Romantic era: a genius poet, a brilliant philologist and a sophisticated translator

Tour of Leopardi's House | Languaging Diversity 2016 at UniMC

Since his early childhood and for all his short life, Leopardi tried his hands at learning, mastering and translating the languages of the Classics (Ancient Greek and Latin), besides Sanskrit, biblical Hebrew, French, German, Spanish and English. Scattered in his works, and above all in the Zibaldone, we can find his reflections on the diversity of languages, the comparison between them and the rendition of such differences in translation. For Leopardi, indeed, translation should not conceal the language and culture of the original, but be instead a “faithful” version of the original, in the language as well as in the purpose - a “transparent” imitation not sacrificed nor subjugated to the target language and culture.

With these premises, the tour of Leopardi’s house will close the Languaging Diversity 2016 conference, both temporally and thematically.

The tour includes:

  • Round trip from Macerata to Recanati
  • Tour of the house and famous library, accompanied by an expert guide in Italian or English (30 minutes long)
  • Self-guided visit to the museum exhibition located in the former olive oil mill of the palace (30 minutes long)
  • Wine-tasting/aperitivo, with wines from the Marche region, held in the old cellars of the palace (one glass of white wine, one glass of red wine and some snacks).
